Glucosamine and chondroitin

Also appears on labels as: glucosamine hydrochloride, chondroitin sulfate, glucosamine

Structural building blocks of cartilage, harvested from shellfish shells or animal cartilage.

Watched ingredients get highlighted on every product panel you open.

Where it comes from
Shellfish processing and cartilage extraction, or made synthetically.
Why it's in the product
Joint support claims.
Safety and toxicity
Very safe. The honest issue is efficacy and dose: clinical evidence in dogs is mixed at best, and the amount delivered by a food is usually far below the doses used in trials. When a panel says chicken meal is a source of glucosamine, that is marketing on top of an ingredient that was going in anyway.
Interactions and who should be careful
Shellfish-derived, so worth noting if your pet has a documented shellfish sensitivity.

General reference, not veterinary advice. Dose, breed, and existing conditions change the answer, so talk to your vet before changing what your pet eats. Think we got this wrong? Tell us and we log it publicly.
