Worth knowing

Microplastics (synthetic toy materials)

Also appears on labels as: polyester plush, nylon chews, TPE, soft plastics

Synthetic toy materials abrade and shed tiny plastic particles that a dog swallows during normal play. The long-term significance is unsettled, but the exposure is avoidable.

What the research says

Every synthetic polymer sheds. Polyester plush and fiberfill release microfibers as a toy is mouthed and torn; hard nylon and TPE chews grind off particle-scale fragments. Peer-reviewed work has begun documenting microplastics and their associated additives in pet food, pet blood, and pet feces, and chew toys are one plausible route of ingestion.

The health significance for dogs is still an open question, so we treat this as a caution rather than an avoid. It is a small, avoidable exposure: natural rubber, cotton, and other plant- or animal-derived materials sidestep it entirely, which is why we flag the synthetic chews and name the natural alternative on each product.
